Dr. Okem Okpara
February 24, 2020
7 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Born to Nigerian parents in Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Okpara spent most of his late childhood and early adolescence in Nigeria. It was during this time that he witnessed disease and the power of medicine to diagnose and treat illness, which fueled his passion to become a physician. Dr. Okpara is the third of six children, three of whom are also physicians, inspired by their father, a retired family practitioner.
Dr. Okpara is a board-certified emergency physician. Upon completion of his residency at New York’s Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn in 2005, he stayed on as a faculty member before returning to Texas in 2009. Dr. Okpara received his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in 2002 and obtained a B.A. in Biology, Chemistry, and Philosophy at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, in 1998.
